LRT and MRT Price Hike!!

LRT and MRT are going to raise their transportation fee from 15 pesos to 20 - 25 pesos. This is outrageous! if they think that people will still ride the LRT or MRT by doing this they are mad! if the LRT and MRT are losing money by operating why don't they just shut the whole train system down? and let's go back to the time where everyone rides the Damn Jeepney, this is really not going to have a good outcome for both passengers and train operators. =(

Tollway Fees are also going to be raised. Click to Read Article

Honestly, I don't see any problem.

The good thing I can see here is that less people would be inclined to use the LRT/MRT. As a result: less tulakan. :))

Also: I find it ridiculous that pedicabs and tricycles cost more than the LRT/MRT.

less tulakan, but it will create heavy traffic on the streets because people will be more inclined to ride the jeepney instead.

you can't compare pedicabs and tricycles to LRT/MRT. apple's and oranges.

VERY RIGHT! U can compare, both r means of transportation........
How much investment for a pedicab? How much for MRT? so not apples and oranges, but gravel and gold.

But a 5 Peso increase would also be reasonable, then another 5 maybe 1 year later. (in the meantime a good service could justify the increase, not trains where passengers are like sardines in can)

apple's and oranges because pedicabs are for few passengers only and lrt are for mass transportation.

5 peso increase is acceptable. but making it 44php or more than twice of the original price is crazy. it will cost more damage than good.

That's very right!!!!

It is not relevant if it is for 1 or 100 passengers, the question is only: How much do I invest and how/when do I get back my investment.
Or would you invest when the ROI is after 100 yrs? Simple mathematics..........

That's right! But 1 thing to consider: Was the former price the real price, meaning was it reflecting the costs? Maybe not, just subsidized. And this can be done by the government only, why should a private comapny subsidize???? For me the thing is simple: price need to be increased reasonable and service need to improve substantial. A much better organisation should be implemented.

well for me if the govt. think that by increasing the fare will help lessen the problem, they are wrong. Since people won't be riding the lrt/mrt anymore so they will earn less therefore making the govt. subsidize money again and worst the streets will be filled with people riding jeepneys.

well at least the few people who will ride the lrt/mrt would be comfortable and the rest will be jammed in traffic.

I am not sure. In case the additional revenue is used to let trains go e.g. every minute during rush hours, then it will lessen the problem. I mean why I need let to pass 3 trains and the 4th is still overloaded?
Since people won't be riding the lrt/mrt anymore...
Simple mathematics: half passengers and double fare equals same revenue, so the passengers who will ride get a value for money, which they definitely do not get now
actually it is all about an intelligent organization of the schedule and the fares...... anyway the network of underground/subways here compared to other major cities in the world is not really that huge......so it should not be too difficult to just organize that 3 lines proper

half passengers.. that is IF half of the passengers will still ride the LRT/MRT. If not then the govt. will still subsidize money and the streets jam packed. Great Idea. =D

Transport fares even with the increase won't go over 30 php. Seems reasonable enough.

Im pretty sure half of passengers will ride at P20 to P25 per ride (so a P10 increase). Besides, I consider P25 for a ride from Taft to North (16km!!!) for very reasonable. A jeep ride is P7 for 3 km, so pls calculate how cheap it stil is. Even P30 is still cheaper than a jeep. Plus, with aircon (most of the time it functions). The other day I had to let 4 trains pass, I lost 30 mins. If you multiply that with thousands of riders you may imagine the damage. In my case, P10 compared to 30 mins, I rather pay that small amount.
And last but not least, the emission of the MRT can be considered less than a jeep (on a per passenger basis). The emission testing anyway is a joke here, look at the buses....

For what do they need the money anyways?

"Transportation and Communications Secretary Jose De Jesus had said the government spends more than P5 billion a year for MRT operations and maintenance."---http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/nation/view/20100729-283847/MRT-LRT-fare-hike-first-a-test-for-Aquino--solon

If this is really the case, then, there would only be 4M for net profit before tax.
